Amazing as it sounds, Hull and Chelsea is a top three showdown to see which club can stay on the heels of or even draw level on points with leaders Liverpool.
Phil Brown's play-off winners are chasing a fifth successive Premier League win, and are looking to complete a nap hand of top-flight victories over London clubs.
Chelsea are still smarting from Sunday's home defeat to Liverpool, which brought an end to their unbeaten record under Luis Felipe Scolari, their 29-match undefeated Premier League sequence and 86-strong sting of Stamford Bridge league matches without defeat.
Chelsea have gone 85 Premier League matches since suffering consecutive defeats, a run that spans back to the last two games of the 2005-06 season.
If Hull can hold onto a top four placing after this round of games, they will become only the sixth newly promoted club to have held such an elevated position after the first 10 games.

He missed Sunday's defeat to Manchester City and manager Tony Pulis will make a late decision on his fitness.
Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Grodon has only a 50% chance of being fit to face Stoke after missing Saturday's win over Newcastle with a twisted ankle.
Kenwyne Jones is in contention after making his comeback from four months out with a knee ligament injury.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane on the throw-in threat of Stoke midfielder Rory Delap:
"Because they're in the Premier League there's more media exposure and people talk about Stoke they've mentioned Rory and he's an asset for their team.
"We can't just get bogged down with that area of their team, they've got some good players and experience, physically a strong team.

Having inspired Tottenham to their first league win of the season, Harry Redknapp takes his new charges to their nearest neighbours, looking the 1,500th league victory of their 126-year history. It would also wrap up back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time in 2008.
Redknapp is also hoping to become the first of six Spurs managers to win the north London derby. David Pleat, Glenn Hoddle, Jacques Santini, Martin Jol and Juande Ramos all failed to mastermind a victory against their fierce rivals.
Arsenal, four points off the pace, are chasing a fourth straight win in all competitions.
The 143rd North London league derby and 160th competitive meeting of Arsenal and Tottenham is taking place on a Wednesday night for the first time in nine years.
Under Juande Ramos Tottenham made their worst ever start to a league campaign. Such is the paradox, that a win here will give them eight points, one more than was accrued after the first 10 games last season.
Spurs beat Arsenal 5-1 when they last met in the Carling Cup in January, but Arsenal completed the double over them in the league. The Gunners hold a 17-match unbeaten sequence against Spurs (10 wins, seven draws).
Tottenham haven't taken all three points off their arch enemies since Doug Livermore and Ray Clemence' side won 2-1 at White Hart Lane on 7 November 1999.
Spurs' only away victory came in the initial season of Premier League football; a 1-3 success against a weakened Arsenal team at Highbury on 11 May 1993, which also completed Tottenham's only Premier League double over the Gunners.
Distance between the clubs: 4.5 miles (7 kilometres).
Former Tottenham midfielder Tim Sherwood is considering new Spurs manager Harry Redknapp's offer to join his coaching staff at White Hart Lane.
Redknapp, who left Portsmouth for Spurs over the weekend, has already brought in Kevin Bond as one of his assistants.
"I'm due to speak to Harry but I have a lot of things to consider," Sherwood, who works as a television pundit, told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"It's a great opportunity - there must be a queue a mile long for that job."
Sherwood spent nearly four years at White Hart Lane, making over 100 appearances for the club before being signed by Redknapp at Pompey.
Now retired, he is working as a football pundit for Setanta and is involved with Icon magazine alongside Redknapp's son Jamie.
"Tim's knowledge of the game is tremendous and he tells it as it is. He's terrific in the dressing room," said Spurs boss Redknapp.
"He's got a big future in the game if he takes that gamble."
Sherwood has already spoken to Redknapp about the role and is due to hold further talks with his former manager.
Sherwood added: "It's very flattering. If I ever wanted to get back into football the club I would choose would be Tottenham and the manager I would work with would be Harry Redknapp.
"It is the biggest club I ever played for but I owe it to Harry to want to give it one million per cent of my time."
After deciding to leave Fratton Park to succeed Juande Ramos, Redknapp was in the dugout on Sunday as Spurs beat Bolton 2-0 in their first Premier League win of the season.
I've left Portsmouth with the best team they've probably ever had
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp
And following the game he said he was confident there is enough class in the squad to steer them clear of relegation worries.
"There is real quality in this group of players here," said Redknapp. "You look through and there are international players."
Ramos was sacked as Spurs manager late on Saturday, with Redknapp officially confirmed as his successor on Sunday - just hours before they were due to entertain Bolton.
Redknapp also said the club's development coach Clive Allen would definitely have a role to play in his new coaching set-up.
Redknapp excited by Spurs challenge
Bond worked as assistant to Redknapp at West Ham, Portsmouth and Southampton, and had been manager at League Two side Bournemouth before getting sacked in September.
He was at White Hart Lane with Redknapp on Sunday and arrived with the new boss at Spurs' training ground, at Chigwell, Essex, on Monday for a session with the players.
Redknapp has already confirmed he plans to dip into the transfer market in January and hinted that he would be interested in bringing Pompey striker Jermain Defoe back to White Hart Lane "if he ever came up for sale".
"If Portsmouth want to sell some of their players, there's an open market," he told 5 Live.
"They've got some fantastic players there, absolutely top, top players, they really have."
Looking back at his time at Pompey, Redknapp says he only has fond memories: "I loved it there and had nothing but great times there," he said.
"That is why it was a wrench to leave because the fans and everybody there have been fantastic to me.
"But I can walk away and I've left them with the best team they've probably ever had.

"We always knew that he was good at taking the ball out of defence because he has such wonderful balance and great pace.
"Now we are seeing more edge to his game and more of a contribution in terms of being voluble towards his team-mates. He is much better at that."

Tony Adams has been confirmed as the new manager of Portsmouth following the departure of Harry Redknapp.
Adams, 42, took charge of the team alongside coach Joe Jordan for Sunday's 1-1 draw with Fulham following Redknapp's departure to Tottenham.
The former Arsenal captain and England captain was named as Redknapp's number two in 2006.
He endured an ill-fated spell in charge of Wycombe and had coaching jobs in the Netherlands with Feyenoord and Utrecht.
Former Bolton and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce and ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant, who worked as technical director at Fratton Park in 2006, were reportedly among the favourites to take over from Redknapp.
Adams begins his reign as Portsmouth boss with a trip to league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.
Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie said on Sunday that the south-coast club would take their time in finding a new manager.
Redknapp, who ended his second spell at Portsmouth after three years in charge, has already put in a good word for Adams and Jordan.
"I spoke to Peter about it and said 'you've got Joe and Tony and they are both terrific guys'," stated Redknapp.
"Joe is very experienced, Tony is up and coming in the managerial game and works very hard. I don't think either of them would do any harm, for sure."
Storrie insisted there were no financial problems at the club and that decisions would continue to be driven by owner Alexandre Gaydamak.
"In the summer we sold Sulley Muntari for a club record fee and sold Pedro Mendes but used most of that money in bringing in Peter Crouch and Younes Kaboul and a couple of loan players," he added.
"If we were to sell players we would reinvest and bring other players in. We've got a very, very good squad here, a quality side, and when January comes we will approach it then.
"Sacha Gaydamak has owned this club for two-and-a-half years and has continued to put finance into the club to bring in players.
"It will be his decision in January whether he wants to continue that growth and expand."

Middlesbrough legend Juninho says he would love to play one last game for the club at the Riverside Stadium.
The Brazilian, 35, who had three spells at Boro, told BBC Tees: "I hope the club can find a date for a friendly game. It could be next pre-season.
"Before I finish my career I would like to wear a Middlesbrough shirt again and play in front of the crowd."
Juninho has also backed his former team-mate and current Boro boss Gareth Southgate to become a top manager.
The midfielder, who was named as Boro's best-ever player in a fans' poll, now lives in Sao Paulo but still follows the team's results closely and is confident manager Southgate has a bright future in the game.
"I think he is going to become a very good manager because he was already a manager when he was a player," said Juninho.
"He liked to organise the game from the back and he has the talent to be a manager."
Juninho, who was known as the Little Fella by the Boro fans, had some special words for the supporters: "They are part of my family. I will never forget what they did for me.
"When I think of the good memories I think of all the supporters shouting my name."
Juninho was first signed for Middlesbrough by Bryan Robson for £4.25m from Sao Paulo in 1995 before leaving for Atletico Madrid two years later.
He returned to Teesside on loan in 1999 before signing on a permanent basis once more in 2002.

Hull City visit West Bromwich Albion, on the look-out for a fourth successive Premier League victory which will put them level on points with the pacesetters Chelsea and Liverpool.
This is the only Saturday 1500 hours kick off in the Premier League this weekend.
With five wins and two draws from their first eight matches, Phil Brown's Tigers have made the best start by a top-flight debutant in 115 years.
Their 17 points out of 24, equals the second best start to a Premier League campaign by a promoted club, matching Blackburn's performance in 1992-93, and three points inferior to Nottingham Forest's total in 1994-95. Forest had 21 points after the first nine outings 14 seasons ago.
Hull's return has overshadowed West Brom's performance, which has been their best ever start to a Premier League campaign.
Both West Brom and Hull have conceded 11 Premier League goals so far, yet the Yorkshire club are eight places and seven points better off.
Both meetings between West Brom and Hull in the Championship last season were won by the team playing away from home.

Striker Robbie Keane (pelvis) is still a doubt while Spaniard Fernando Torres (hamstring) is definitely out.
Two of the Premier League's elite cross swords at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea and Liverpool are locked together at the summit on 20 points, with six wins a piece. Each have dropped just four points and both are looking for their fourth consecutive league victory.
They are the two remaining unbeaten clubs in the top division; Liverpool have not suffered defeat in 15 league games, Chelsea in 29 and in an amazing 86 at home over four years and eight months.
The pair are meeting for the first time since the Londoners' victory in the semi-finals of the Champions League in April, and for the 21st time in just over four years.
Rafael Benitez is looking for a first away Liverpool victory against a fellow 'Big Four' club in his watch. The Reds have only managed two points and four goals in the 12 games on the grounds of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United since his arrival at Anfield.
The Merseysiders are making a 19th attempt to win their 19th league title, and first in the Premier League; Chelsea have two Premier League titles already, yet have an average finish in this league of fifth whereas the Reds' is fourth.
Liverpool have only registered one win from their 16 Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge; 0-1 on 7 January 2004, when Bruno Cheyrou scored the only goal of the game.
The Reds were the last team to beat Chelsea at the Bridge, prior to Arsenal's triumph in February 2004.

Despondent Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate admits they are "one million per cent" in a relegation battle after suffering another defeat on Thursday.
Spurs lost to Udinese in the Uefa Cup to compound their league problems.
"People say we are too good to go down but we aren't. I've seen it happen at Leeds and they had a better team than we do here," Woodgate told BBC Sport.
"We've got to roll our sleeves up and start grafting because, I am telling you now, it's going to be hard."
He added: "We are bottom of the Premier League with two points and it doesn't really get much worse than that."
When asked if Spurs were fighting for their Premier League life, Woodgate added: "One million per cent we are at the moment."
Udinese won after a blunder by Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes saw them concede their third penalty in two matches, while Jamie O'Hara was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of a minute, becoming the third Tottenham player to be dismissed in the last two games.
Asked if he could take any positives from the game, Woodgate said: "No, none at all.
"What went wrong was the same as has been happening in every single game we have played in this season - a lack of concentration. We have got to start learning quickly."
The defeat was a fourth in five games for Spurs and, with Bolton their next opponents in the Premier League on Sunday, Woodgate said Juande Ramos's side must end that dismal run quickly.
"A goal goes in and you think 'here we go again'," the England defender added.
"When you have a losing mentality like we've got at the moment you have got to get really stuck in and start winning games or you just get used to losing and losing and losing."
Woodgate left Leeds for Newcastle before they dropped out of the Premier League but he has not forgotten the fate of his former team-mates.
Indebtedness, administration and relegation to League One followed for the Elland Road club and the 28-year-old is anxious for Spurs to avoid their fate.
"We have really got to roll our sleeves up here and start grafting because, I am telling you now, it is going to be hard," he said.
"We are bottom of the Premier League with two points and it doesn't really get much worse than that.
"Without a doubt I will take responsibility - I have got to stand up like everyone else. It is the players who shoulder the blame because we are not pulling our weight on the pitch.
I'm very angry because I don't like to lose. We lost this match in this competition and now we have to win matches to qualify for the next stage
"If we are not producing the goods and getting the wins then pressure is going to be put on the manager, the chairman and Damien Comolli (Spurs' sporting director).
"The way we have been playing, we deserve to be down at the bottom of the table - we deserve to be where we are, end of story."
Ramos is under increasing pressure at White Hart Lane after the worst start to a season in the club's history.
He revealed his frustration after they were beaten in Italy, saying: "I'm very angry because I don't like to lose. We lost this match in this competition and now we have to win matches to qualify for the next stage."
But the Spaniard played down David Bentley's exclusion from his 18-man match-day squad, hours after the England winger spoke out about Tottenham's disastrous form.
Bentley was in Italy but did not even make it on to the bench.
"I chose these 18 players out of the 20 in the squad," Ramos explained. "I don't know what happened before the match.
"His (Bentley's) reaction was normal, the same as the other players who are not playing."
Now Ramos must lift his side, who are four points adrift at the bottom of the table, as they return to domestic action in Sunday's home game against Wanderers.
"The situation is not very comfortable," the former Sevilla boss added. "At this moment (morale) in the dressing room is not in a normal situation but they know it's possible to win in football and it's possible to lose."

Arsenal, 2-5 winners over Fenerbahce in Turkey midweek, look to follow up last Saturday's 3-1 home win over Everton with another three points over West Ham to stay in touch with the Premier League pacesetters.
A win for West Ham would take them to within a point of the Gunners, but they are in danger of tumbling to three successive league losses for the first time under Gianfranco Zola.
This is the fourth of 20 top-flight local derbies in the capital this season, and the Hammers go into the match top of the table for London Premier League derbies, courtesy of their 1-2 away win over Fulham. Needless to say, Chelsea are London's top team in the table that counts, Arsenal the second best and West Ham third.
Arsenal did the double over West Ham last season, having suffered a trio of defeats to them in the three previous Premier League clashes.

HEAD TO HEAD:
West Ham were one of nine clubs Arsenal did the double over last season; the Gunners were one of two clubs to do the double over the Hammers. The other was Chelsea.
Marlon Harewood came off the bench to score a late winner in this corresponding fixture on Guy Fawkes Day 2006. The celebration of then manager Alan Pardew so angered his opposite number, that Arsene Wenger famously refused to shake hands afterwards, which cost him a £10,000 fine.
Five months later the Hammers brought an end to Arsenal's unbeaten league record at the Emirates Stadium and wrapped up a first ever Premier League 'double' over them, and first against their London rivals since 1964-65.

Portsmouth:
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp launched a scathing attack on referee Darko Ceferin after Pompey's 3-0 Uefa Cup defeat by Braga in Portugal.
The Slovenian official cautioned two Portsmouth players and disallowed Papa Bouba Diop's header for a foul.
"From the start of the game I just felt the referee had no idea whatsoever, it was frightening," said Redknapp.
"Where was he from? Slovakia? Slovenia? I'm sure it's a good league there and he's been handling lots of big games."
Goals from Luis Aguiar, Wason Renteria and Osorio Alan ensured Portsmouth were well beaten in their opening Group E match at Estadio Municipal.
Redknapp criticised the Braga players for their perceived theatrics and felt his side were treated unfairly by Ceferin.
"They were diving all over the place. They played well, they won the game, but I just felt every time there was a tackle someone rolled around, it was a yellow card. It was a poor game," he said.
Portsmouth's next group match is against AC Milan at Fratton Park on 27 November. They then travel to Wolfsburg before playing Heerenveen at home.
"Our passing, especially the final ball in was poor and we missed some injured players but it's not all over yet," Redknapp added.
"We've still got two big home games in the group - one against AC Milan - and it's still all to play for."
Match Facts/History:
Portsmouth's 100th home Premier League match comes on Roy Hodgson's 300th day in charge of opponents Fulham, who would take their total of away points in this league to 100 with a draw.
Pompey, thrashed by Braga in the Uefa Cup on Thursday, are looking to extend a three-match home winning run in the Premier League; Fulham are anxious to halt a three-match losing league sequence on the road.
Fulham pulled off their first ever top-flight victory at Fratton Park on their last visit on the last day of last season, which saw them retain their Premier League status.
Both these clubs, who had goalless draws last time out, have an average Premier League finish of 13th. This is Portsmouth's sixth season in this league and Fulham's eighth.
Distance between the clubs: 70 miles (112 kilometres)
Fulham and Chelsea are Portsmouth's nearest neighbours as far as the Premier League is concerned.

Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones may feature after playing for the reserves midweek, while Nyron Nosworthy is back after recovering from a hamstring tear.
Dwight Yorke (international duty) and Liam Miller (groin) both return.
Newcastle are without captain Michael Owen, who is struggling from the groin strain picked up in training last week.
But Jonas Gutierrez is on the way back to full fitness and looks set to play some part against the Black Cats, while Joey Barton could also return.
Teams:
Sunderland (from): Gordon, Fulop, Chimbonda, Ferdinand, Collins, Nosworthy, McCartney, Diouf, Whitehead, Miller, Reid, Richardson, Malbranque, Tainio, Henderson, Cisse, Murphy, Healy, Chopra, Jones, Waghorn.
Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Beye, Edgar, Enrique, N'Zogbia, Taylor, Coloccini, Cacapa, Bassong, Tozer, Butt, Guthrie, Geremi, Duff, Barton, Jonas, Doninger, Xisco, Ameobi, Carroll, Donaldson, Ranger, Danquah.
Sunderland boss Roy Keane:
"The fans have had to put up with a lot over the years and it is about time we gave them something to shout about.
"Twenty eight years is a long time and it is about time someone did something about it.
"Sometimes in football certain teams have a good record in certain fixtures and Newcastle have a good record at our place. But it is up to our players to create their own bit of history."
Newcastle interim manager Joe Kinnear:
"Hopefully we can go there and put on the same sort of performance like we have in the past couple of games.
Barton has turned a corner - Kinnear
"That won't be easy because Roy Keane has done a fantastic job there and it will be a tough one for us.
"There's a lot of confidence and hopefully it will put us in good stead.
"I have been involved in various derbies but they tell me this is the one that beats everything else, so I am looking forward to it.
"Everybody is saying that if there is one win you want each season it is this one.
"It means a lot to the people of Newcastle and the supporters particularly. I am well aware of the intensity of it all and we'll be giving it our best shot."

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand (groin) and Patrice Evra (hamstring) should return, with Michael Carrick's comeback pencilled in for Wednesday.
Dimitar Berbatov (hip) and Cristiano Ronaldo (knee) have overcome knocks, while Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves (both knee) are still missing.

Everton boss David Moyes:
"It is a game we are looking forward to. I think there will be more pressure on them to win the game.
"Obviously we need the points to move away from the wrong end of the table but we are in a situation where we have nothing to lose really, I think most people would expect Manchester United to win so we have to go out and try and make a real game of it.
"We have struggled recently trying to beat the top four but I think they would say that coming to try and beat Everton has been a struggle for them as well."
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney:
"For obvious reasons, Saturday is a big game for me.
"It is always nice for any player to score 100 goals and if I can do that back at Everton, where I started and at Goodison Park, where I scored my first Premier League goal, it would be really pleasing.
"But it wouldn't really matter if it was my first or my 100th, it would still be really sweet."

Inverness:
Inverness Caledonian Thistle captain Grant Munro has signed a two-year contract extension at the club.
The 28-year old defender's terms had been due to expire at the end of this season but will now run until 2011.
"I am really please to have agreed a new contract with the club," Munro told the Highlander's official website.
"To be playing in the SPL for my hometown team has been like a dream come true and my career has gone better than I could have imagined."
Munro is not known for his scoring prowess, however he did score the clubs 1000th goal in February 2008.
Celtic:
Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will miss next week's Champions League match with Manchester United due to a groin injury.
The Dutchman, who will also be absent for Saturday's trip to Inverness, was substituted early in Celtic's most recent league match against Hamilton.
And manager Gordon Strachan says the forward "won't be ready for some time".
Vennegoor of Hesselink scored the opener in Celtic's 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in 2006.
Meanwhile, Strachan believes Scotland have a "right good chance" of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals.
Norway's home defeat to the Netherlands on Wednesday evening leaves Scotland in second place in Group Nine.
The Netherlands, for whom Vennegoor of Hesselink has won 19 caps, top the group with three wins out of three.

Middlesbrough:
Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Grounds has vowed to fight to keep his place in the first-team.
The 20-year-old was recalled from a loan spell at Norwich City to play in Boro's 1-0 win at Wigan Athletic after injuries hit the squad.
"If the manager sticks with me, hopefully I can get a few more opportunities," Grounds told BBC Tees.
First choice left-back Andrew Taylor is now fit again after recovering from a hip injury.
Grounds graduated from Middlesbrough's academy and made his Premier League debut against Liverpool at the Riverside last season.
He made three starts and two substitute appearances during his time at Norwich City.
"You get more maturity with being away from home and playing in a different environment. When you come back you feel a lot more confident to be able to go into the first-team," Grounds added.
Boro's 1-0 victory over the Latics was their first away win in the Premier League since they beat Portsmouth in December 2007 and it was also their first clean sheet of the season.
Chelsea:
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has been elected to parliament in the remote Chukotka region, only months after resigning as governor.
The Central Election Commission says Mr Abramovich won 97% of Sunday's vote to the regional parliament.
President Dmitry Medvedev had allowed him to step down as governor in July. Previously Vladimir Putin is thought to have refused to accept his resignation.
The owner of Chelsea FC is now expected to head the regional legislature.
Mr Abramovich became very popular in the remote Arctic region after investing millions of his own dollars there in social services.
Russian media suggested that Mr Abramovich had attempted repeatedly to leave his position as governor but that former President Putin was opposed to the move.
Mr Abramovich, 41, was ranked earlier this year by Forbes magazine as Russia's second wealthiest businessman with a reported capital of more than $24bn (£13.8bn).
He made his wealth in oil and natural resources, following the liberalisation of Russian markets in the late 1980s and 1990s.
However, there have been reports that his fortune has been heavily eroded by the crash in world stock markets.

Arsenal:
England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce says Wales Under-21 star Aaron Ramsey is "worth his weight in gold".
The Arsenal midfielder, 17, impressed Pearce as Wales lost their European Championship play-off 5-4 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw.
Ramsey scored a 30-yard wonder strike and set up Simon Church for Wales' second in a man-of-the match display.
Pearce said: "People who can score goals out of nothing, like Aaron did to us, are worth their weight in gold."
He added: "Ramsey was instrumental for them, he was a constant threat.
"Not many players force me into an early change but I replaced Lee Cattermole for Fabrice Muamba after half-an-hour in a bid to nullify his threat."
And Wales Under-21 boss Brian Flynn believes Ramsey, who joined Arsenal in the summer from Cardiff, is going to be one of the game's future stars.
"Ramsey can be as good as anyone in Europe," stated Flynn.
"He can only go from strength to strength at Arsenal.
"He is at a very good club because manager Arsene Wenger's record of nurturing young players is second to none - and I know Aaron is happy there.
"His goal against England was unstoppable, they'll be repeating that a lot over the next few years.
"The pass for Church's strike in the second leg was also sublime but he is more than capable of doing the unexpected."
Now Ramsey will be aiming for his first senior cap in John Toshack's Wales side and Flynn believes that will come soon.
"His all-round performance showed how much he has improved since his summer move to Arsenal," added Flynn.
"He is now only a quarter of an inch away from a first full cap.
"He doesn't need to do a lot, he'll be there soon."
And Pearce urged Ramsey to take Arsenal team-mate Theo Walcott's steady road to stardom.
Walcott, 19, scored a hat-trick for England against Croatia in September but it followed a period of hype and frustration.
"Aaron is at the club that will manage his development properly," he said.
"Arsenal have a proud history of doing right by their youngsters, just look at Theo Walcott.
"Arsene Wenger spent £12m on Walcott and now that looks like a shrewd investment, as does the money Arsenal paid for Ramsey."
Everton:
Manager David Moyes has ended speculation over his future by signing a new five-year deal at Everton.
Moyes, 45, delayed signing the deal and admitted it may have unsettled his players after they were knocked out of the Carling Cup and the Uefa Cup.
"There have been many different things for different reasons," Moyes told the club's website of the delay.
"But we are here now. The big thing for me is that I am at Everton, as far as I am concerned, for another five years."
Moyes, who has been in charge at Goodison Park since March 2002, has endured a difficult start to the season with Everton currently 15th in the Premier League table with eight points after seven games.
And the manager, who would have been out of contract at the end of the season, added: "The job is to make us better than we have been.
I am obviously very pleased that the contract is now concluded
Chairman Bill Kenwright:
"I am really excited and really pleased. I am pleased for everybody - I'm pleased for myself and my family who were desperate to get it signed and secured and it is always what I wanted to do."
The deal, signed at Everton's training ground Finch Farm on Tuesday, has been concluded against a backdrop of uncertainty over the club's future.
Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright has indicated that he is willing to sell the club to a new owner with the finances to allow Everton to compete at the top end of the Premier League table.
And Keith Harris, chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, has revealed he is hopeful of finding a buyer for Everton.
But Kenwright said he was delighted that Moyes had signed his new contract.
"There have always been two people - myself and David - confident that the long term future of the manager would eventually be secured," he said.
"The signatures of those two people are now on a contract.
"I am obviously very pleased that the contract, that I've always believed to be the most important contract, is now concluded."
Everton were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Blackburn and lost to Standard Liege in the Uefa Cup in the space of eight days.
But since Moyes succeeded Walter Smith as manager the club he has twice been named League Manager Association Manager of the Year and Everton have twice qualified for the Uefa Cup and once for the Champions League.
"Since I took over six years ago, I think there has been an improvement and the job is that I want a similar improvement over the next five years or so," added Moyes.
"I want the ambition to be greater. I want the expectancy to be higher and I want Everton overall to be higher on the field and off the field, I am determined to try and take it forward."

Liverpool:
Fernando Torres could miss Liverpool's next three matches after suffering a thigh injury with Spain on Wednesday.
Reds manager Rafael Benitez fears the striker, 24, will be out for about 10 days if final medical reports confirm the player has a hamstring strain.
That would mean missing Premier League matches against Wigan and Chelsea along with a Champions League game against his former club Atletico Madrid.
"I am very disappointed about this," said Benitez on Thursday.
Torres, Liverpool's top scorer last season in his first year with the club, limped off after only 16 minutes of Spain's 2-1 win over Belgium in Brussels.
There are too many international games, and the demands on the players are too much.
The Spaniard has struggled with hamstring problems before, most recently at the beginning of September when he was sidelined for the international break after tearing the muscle in the goalless draw against Aston Villa.
Another Liverpool forward, Ryan Babel, damaged his ankle playing for the Netherlands in their 1-0 win in Norway.
Babel, who missed Euro 2008 with ankle ligament problems, played no further part in Wednesday's match after he went down under a tackle from Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen on 26 minutes.
With Liverpool, second in the Premier League, facing a number of important games in the coming weeks, Benitez is disappointed to lose key players and has voiced his discontent at the international schedule.
"To lose any players is a big blow," he said.
"There are too many international games, and the demands on the players are too much. Someone needs to analyse this situation, because it is putting the players at risk of injury."
His best hope is that Torres could be fit enough to make the critical away trip to leaders Chelsea on Sunday 26 October, but details concerning Babel's injury remain unclear as he is yet to be examined by club doctors.
Liverpool midfielder and fellow Spaniard Xabi Alonso told the club website that Torres' injury was a blow: "It is undoubtedly bad news.
"We have to wait and see what the tests say, but we do not stop now until around Christmas, and we have a big calendar coming up - we cannot let up.
"It is not the first time this has happened [to Torres] with the national side, and it is a blow to have an injury when he is in such a good streak of form."
Wigan:
Dave Whelan believes the time will come when a Premier League club is left in a financial crisis because their foreign owner "spits his dummy" and quits.
With nine Premier League outfits having foreign owners, Wigan chairman Whelan said it is probable that one will walk.
"I can see a foreign owner spitting his dummy and leaving a club piled high with debt," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"When it does happen I think it will be an awful shame for that club, which is left with £100m to £150m of debt."
Only last week, Football Association chairman Lord Triesman spoke of the financial dangers facing Premier League clubs, who have accrued an estimated £3bn debt between them.
And speaking to the Sportsweek programme, Whelan, who conceded that Wigan's debt stands at £22m, said that a form of salary capping was the only way to avoid a club from England's top flight going into receivership.
"There is no doubt that Europe is very, very jealous of the Premier League," he stated. "The more we dominate Europe, and last year we had both teams in the Champions League final, the worse it's going to get."
"Uefa are going to say things about debt and I agree. What we should be doing is limiting the debt a club has.
"Let's say 25 or 30% of income and you can't have any more debt on the balance sheet than that. If you do you're breaking rules and get points deducted.
"It is a salary cap but I think it would regulate clubs and stop these awful things happening when clubs go into receivership."

Aston Villa:
Aston Villa winger Ashley Young has been named the Premier League's player of the month for September.
The 23-year-old, who has not missed a minute of Villa's league games this season, also won the award in April.
He scored twice and set up two goals in September as Villa enjoyed three successive wins to move up the table.
Young joins an elite band of players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, who have won the award more than once.
Portsmouth:
Portsmouth coach Joe Jordan has said he cannot understand why Rangers striker Kris Boyd has decided to turn down the chance of playing for Scotland.
Boyd, who was an unused substitute against Norway, has said he will not play while George Burley is manager.
Jordan told BBC Radio Solent: "The individual has got to have the right to do what he wants.
"But I don't understand any individual, whatever nationality, that isn't desperate to play for their country."
And Jordan, who was capped 52 times for Scotland and scored at three World Cups, added: "I feel within Fratton Park there are players from different continents that are desperate to play [international football].
"There were times when I was dropped but it never affected me other than making me more determined to get in the next team, I don't see it any different now to my time.
"I suppose I find it even stranger because he's Scottish and he's turned down the chance to be a feature in the games coming up and there's some big games."
Scotland's next game is a friendly with Argentina on 19 November and is followed by their World Cup qualifier away to Holland on 28 March.

Bolton:
Bolton defender Andy O'Brien has signed a contract extension which will keep him at the Reebok Stadium until 2011.
The 29-year-old centre-back, who joined from Portsmouth in the summer of 2007, said: "I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity that Bolton gave me.
"The way the supporters, the manager Gary Megson and the players have treated me has made me enjoy my football as much as I ever have done.
"I'm delighted to stay and there's plenty of hard work ahead of me now."
O'Brien has started all seven matches in the league for the Trotters this season, and also featured in the club's League Cup defeat to Northampton in August.
"From my point of view, I'm happy at Bolton so if they were happy to keep me then there was never a problem," he added. "I'll continue to work hard and hopefully we'll pick up results."
Blackburn:
Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz has revealed he would relish the chance to join Manchester City should former boss Mark Hughes bid for him in January.
The 27-year-old Paraguay international was brought to Ewood Park by Hughes before the Welshman left for City.
And he admits he would rejoin Hughes, saying: "City is a team with very important financial support.
"I am happy at Rovers but I like the idea of playing for a team that will be fighting for important objectives."
City are expected to launch a number of multi-million pound moves when the next transfer window opens in January, backed by billionaire new owners the Abu Dhabi United Group.
Santa Cruz was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from City in the summer, thought to be around £12m, and Hughes's £32.5m signing of Brazilian Robhino from Real Madrid on 1 September appears to have tempted the striker into considering a move.
"I will keep on doing what I do at Blackburn but if the coach of Manchester City is interested in me, I would like to join Robinho in that team. He is a wonderful player and I would like to play next to him."
Santa Cruz has scored 25 times for Blackburn in all competitions since joining from Bayern Munich for £3.8m in 2007.

Sunderland:
Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand believes joining the club took him out of his comfort zone and could make him a better player for it.
Ferdinand, 23, joined from boyhood team West Ham in August for around £8m and says competition for places has forced him to sharpen up on the field.
"At West Ham I was used to knowing I was in the team every week," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"I know that if I don't perform here I won't be playing."
Anton followed his brother Rio, now at Manchester United, into the first team at Upton Park after breaking through the youth ranks to make his debut against Preston North End in 2003.
After nine years with the Hammers, Ferdinand believes it was the right time to move on and is enjoying life in the North East with Sunderland.
"The way I was always looked at when I was at West Ham was as the young boy who came through the ranks and as Rio's brother," he said.
"Now I'm someone who has been brought in to hopefully make the team better and I'm looked at in a different way.
"It's a blessing to be looked at in that way and the fans have shown me great love and hopefully that will continue as long as I repay them with good performances."

Manchester United:
Celtic fans without tickets have been asked not to make the Champions League trip to Manchester United this month.
May's Uefa Cup final in Manchester was marred by trouble after around 100,000 Rangers fans made the journey south.
"Along with Celtic, we are urging supporters who do not have tickets not to travel to the city," read a joint statement from Manchester officials.
"They will not get into the game and facilities will not be provided for fans to watch the match elsewhere."
The statement was issued on behalf of Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and Manchester United chief executive David Gill.
It added: "Manchester is looking forward to welcoming Celtic fans visiting the city for the Uefa Champions League tie with Manchester United on 21 October.
"We're a city that's passionate about football with a proud reputation for hospitality.
"We promise to show the greatest respect to visiting Celtic fans and are sure that they will respond in kind by helping keep our streets litter-free and abiding by local bye-laws.
"These laws obviously include a ban covering on-street drinking and this will be enforced.
"We have welcomed Celtic supporters to Manchester on many previous occasions with great success. We are sure next week will enjoy the same great experience."
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: "We are sure our fans will travel to Manchester once again with the aim of supporting the club positively as they enjoy another great meeting between two of Europe's great clubs."
Celtic and Manchester United met in the group stage of the tournament in 2006, with the Scottish champions losing 3-2 at Old Trafford and winning 1-0 on home soil.
West Bromwich Albion:
Former Fulham, Birmingham and West Brom striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed he is suffering from testicular cancer.
The 34-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United last summer, has been forced to retire as a result and will undergo surgery next week.
He told the Daily Mirror: "I was diagnosed last Friday and I'm going in for surgery next Thursday.
"The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, but that's at the back of my mind now."
Horsfield began his career at Scarborough in 1992, and his scoring exploits at Halifax earned him a £300,000 move to Fulham in 1996.
He said: "I've had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I've played for and enjoyed it.
"But all I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win."
Horsfield has been told he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early.
"The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small," he added.
Horsfield, who finished last season on loan at Scunthorpe, had been training recently with League One Walsall.
The Barnsley-born forward has also played for Wigan, Leeds and Leicester.

Hearts:
Hearts have agreed to prematurely terminate the contract of record signing Mirsad Beslija.
The Bosnian international winger moved to Tynecastle from Belgium club Genk in January 2006, for a £850,000 fee.
The transfer was clouded when Genk had to involve Fifa after the Edinburgh club delayed payment, taking nearly a year to complete the agreed deal.
However, a series of injuries and loss of form restricted Beslija to just 14 appearances for the club.
The 29-year-old was loaned out to Belgian side Sint-Truiden for a season in August 2007 but was again beset by injury problems.
On his return to Tynecastle, where his deal was due to run until June 2009, Beslija's hopes of kick-starting his career were shattered by knee ligament damage.

Sheffield Wednesday:
Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws says he wants to make a loan signing ahead of Sunday's Steel City derby.
Wednesday have a number of injury worries ahead of the game and Laws wants to add to his squad.
"I would like to do something before the weekend, we knew we had to set aside some money for January," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"We may have to use that money now because we do need to strengthen and I'd like to do that before the game."
You can hear live and exclusive commentary of the Sheffield derby on BBC Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven from 1200 BST.
Sheffield United:
West Ham have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as they attempt to avoid a huge payout to Sheffield United in the Carlos Tevez affair.
CAS will now examine whether it has jurisdiction to hear the case, although a decision on this is not expected until the end of November.
The Lausanne court initially stated its rules would not allow an appeal.
Yet the fact it is willing to hold a preliminary hearing into its jurisdiction offers hope to West Ham.
A three-man panel will now decide whether CAS can hear the case.
One arbitrator was supposed to be provided by each club with the third member, the chairman, being nominated by CAS.
Yet while West Ham have provided an arbitrator, Sheffield United have not, meaning CAS will appoint this member as well.
West Ham are expected to argue that FA rules would be in breach of Fifa statutes if they did not allow for an appeal to CAS.
Last month, CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb told BBC Sport: "As things stand, CAS would not be able to hear this case.
"We would need agreement from Sheffield United and for Football Association rules to allow an appeal to CAS."
The Blades would be reluctant to give agreement to an appeal that could overturn the decision of the independent tribunal.
And the FA actually has a rule that stipulates there cannot be an appeal from the verdict of an independent tribunal.
An independent tribunal ruled West Ham broke Premier League rules when they played Tevez at the end of the 2006/7 season and that he then went on to play a key role in keeping them up.
Sheffield United are claiming more than £30m in compensation from the Hammers.

Hull City:
Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has denied he is interested in securing a loan move for Hull City's Wayne Brown.
The Iron have been linked with the out-of-favour defender, but Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside that there is nothing in the rumours.
"I don't know where that's come from. It's another one of these wonderful yarns and spins, corridor whispers and agents trying to do things.
"No, we've not shown any interest in Wayne Brown at all".
Brown, 31, was an integral part of Hull's promotion to the Premier League last season forming a solid partnership with fellow centre-half Michael Turner.
However, with the arrival of Anthony Gardner and Kamil Zayatte to the club the former Colchester defender has found himself down the pecking order at the KC Stadium.
He has made only two appearances for The Tigers this season, the 2-1 Carling Cup loss to Swansea and the embarrassing 5-0 home defeat to Wigan in the league.
Championship side Doncaster Rovers are also believed to have shown an interest whilst Derby County denied making a move for Brown earlier in the week.

Stoke City midfielder Michael Tonge says the Potters need to turn the Britannia Stadium into a "fortress" if they are to stay in the Premier League.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "We are going to have some tough games against some top sides, but the draw at Liverpool showed we can compete.
"We need to make the Britannia Stadium a fortress because our home form will be vital to our survival."
The 25-year-old joined the Potters from Sheffield United in September.
Tonge, part of the Blades team that spent one season in the top flight in 2006/07, said he has been able to pass on his Premier League experience to his new team-mates.
"I learned that you have to be at your best every week," he said. "As a promoted side you'll be very lucky to get a result if you don't play well.
"When I got promoted with Sheffield United, it took us a few games to adjust to the different type of football played in the Premier League.
"Hopefully we can adjust quickly and go one better than United and stay in the league."
After winning their first home game against Aston Villa, Tony Pulis's men have now lost their last two at the Britannia Stadium against Everton and Chelsea.
They now face a crunch home game on Sunday in a battle of the bottom two against Tottenham Hotspur.

Burton captain Darren Stride returns in place of Greg Pearson after missing the draw with Barrow because of injury.
Manager Nigel Clough is waiting to see if goalkeeper Kevin Poole will be fit while Michael Simpson and Danny Holmes will contest a place in midfield.
Mansfield welcome back defender Adie Moses after injury and he is set to replace suspended Maxime Chanot.
Jason Lee looks likely to remain on the bench with Mark Stallard and Aaron O'Connor again starting up front.
Burton boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Derby:
"Stride being available will be a big plus.
"There's one or two other decisions to make. Kevin Poole will hopefully be fully fit so we'll have to make a choice between him and Saul [Deeny] and it will be between Michael Simpson and Danny Holmes."

Arsene Wenger was delighted that Arsenal put the disappointment of defeat by Hull behind them as they beat Porto 4-0 in the Champions League.
The Gunners boss said: "It is the response I wanted. Maybe it was our most complete performance this season.
"We could have scored a few more but most important was to win and respond in a convincing way.
"I didn't make many changes because sometimes you have to give a team a chance to respond quickly."
Wenger had promised sweeping changes after the 2-1 defeat by Hull on Saturday but in the end made only one, bringing in Samir Nasri for Emmanuel Eboue.
Wenger explained: "I didn't make many changes because I didn't want to give a feeling that you punish one player more than another
Wenger impressed by focused Gunners
"We were sometimes a bit tense, especially at the start, but this time we were focused. At this level in the Premier League or Champions League that is vital.
"That's what we expected. But the first half of the response was here and the second half is on Saturday (away against Sunderland)."
Wenger also praised the display of winger Theo Walcott, who showed he is starting to fulfil his potential with another lively performance.
"At 19 years of age you can't say he's close (to being the finished article)," said the Frenchman.
"I think there's a lot more to come but he has shown again tonight that he's making good progress."

West Bromwich Albion will be without Do-Heon Kim for up to six weeks after he sustained a knee injury in the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.
The South Korean was taken off in the first minute with suspected medial knee ligament damage after attempting to run onto Robert Koren's pass.
"Kim needs to go and get a scan," boss Tony Mowbray told the club's website.
"We hope it's only medial knee damage to keep him out for six weeks, and that it's not any worse than that."
The Baggies are already without midfielder Chris Brunt, who sustained a hamstring injury in the 2-1 defeat at rivals Aston Villa last week.
And defender Neil Clement has been ruled out of action until at least the New Year after undergoing knee surgery.

Wigan's on-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki has been hailed as "awesome" by manager Steve Bruce.
He says the 25-year-old has a chance of making a real name for himself in England during his year at the club.
Zaki is now the top goalscorer in the competition, after his goal in the 2-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
"He put in a fantastic performance. If he keeps playing like that he is going to have a real future in the Premier League," Bruce said.
Zaki is on a year-long loan from Cairo giants Zamalek and Bruce is full of praise for the impact he has had in his short time at the club.
"His physique is great, he has awesome power and pace and of course he wants to score goals which is the important thing," the manager said.
"Amr is going to be a real fans' favourite. Every supporter - whether you support Wigan or you support Man City - loves a trier who gives everything that he has got.
"And that is the one thing about Zaki he gives you every last drop he has got.
"So you can forgive everything, he might make a mistake or give the ball away and he does that at times. But I can't question his attitude."

Southampton head coach Jan Poortvliet has said he feels his young side are starting to learn from their mistakes.
Saints got their first home league win of the season on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over Norwich City at St Mary's.
Poortvliet told BBC Radio Solent: "At the beginning of the season it was more the way we played football, now they go out and they fight."
Saints have started the season with one of the the youngest squads in the club's history.
The average age of the starting eleven against Norwich was just 22, with eight Saints players 20 years of age or under.
The Dutchman added: "It's been a big learning curve in a couple of weeks and it's great."
Southampton have moved up to 16th place in the Championship table and travel to Coventry City on Saturday (kick-off 1720 BST).

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for England's next two World Cup qualifiers.
Rooney, 22, injured his ankle during United's 3-0 Champions League victory away at Aalborg on Tuesday and was stretchered off during the second half.
He is a doubt for United's Premier League game against Blackburn on Saturday, but should be fit to take his place in Fabio Capello's England squad.
They host Kazakhstan on 11 October and travel to Belarus four days later.
A United spokesman told the club's website: "Wayne has an ankle injury and is doubtful for Saturday, but he should recover in time for England's forthcoming matches."
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be relieved Rooney has not suffered ligament damage as he will already be without influential midfielder Paul Scholes for 10 weeks.
Scholes, 33, damaged his medial knee ligaments in the same game and was stretchered off after only 16 minutes in Denmark.

Referee Rob Styles has apologised to Bolton for awarding a controversial penalty against them in their defeat by Manchester United on Saturday.
Styles gave a spot-kick in the 60th minute after Jlloyd Samuel's tackle on Cristiano Ronaldo inside the area.
Ronaldo duly converted the penalty to give United the lead in a game they went on to win 2-0.
The Professional Game Match Official Board (PGMO) told the BBC that Styles spoke to Bolton on Monday to apologise.
Styles will not be punished with a suspension and will be in charge when Tottenham host Hull at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Styles's decision to apologise.
DEBATE:
How do you achieve accountability in football and satisfy the millions of fans inside the stadiums or on their sofas screaming at the officials wondering why he's just pointed to the spot?
"Rob takes a lot of credit," said Ferguson. "It helps in terms of him showing some humility towards the game. That is the most important thing.
"It is good he has done it. It presents him in a different light. It shows he has character and is big enough to do it."
But speaking after Saturday's game, furious Bolton boss Gary Megson described the penalty decision as "nonsense" and said he was not interested in an apology.
"I don't want him to ring me up," said Megson. "I would have more respect from him if he just holds his hands up and says he was wrong."
It is unknown in what manner Styles contacted Bolton on Monday or who he got in touch with.
Styles drew criticism in some quarters for not publicly admitting his mistake on television immediately after the game.
But contrary to some reports, he was not restricted by PGMO guidelines from doing so.
"Referees, should they so wish, have the opportunity to conduct post-match media interviews, after 30 minutes' 'cool-down' time, to clarify any point of law," said a spokesman for PGMO, the body responsible for top referees.
But the PGMO does not want a situation where referees regularly face 'trial by television'.
It stresses that it works closely with officials in analysing their performances after each match in order to maintain and raise standards.
Officials who make mistakes often miss out on refereeing a Premier League match the following weekend.
But the PGMO insists that referees are not automatically demoted when they make a high-profile mistake, merely that they are being taken out of the spotlight for a week or so.

Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander is keen to add to his three Scotland caps after replacing international colleague Allan McGregor in goal at Ibrox.
The Scotland manager George Burley will announce his squad on Thursday for next week's World Cup qualifier against Norway at Hampden.
"Growing up, all you want to do is play for your country," said Alexander.
"I'm very patriotic and I'm very proud of the three caps I've got already - and obviously I'd love to add to them."
McGregor had been strongly challenging Sunderland's Craig Gordon for a starting place with Scotland until injury forced him to miss the conclusion to last season.
But Alexander has been the first-choice keeper at Rangers since McGregor was dropped for the recent league match against Motherwell after failing to recapture his form after recovering from surgery. Coming to Rangers, I knew I was going to be a number two and my place in the Scotland squad was maybe in jeopardy because of that
Even so, the 30-year-old said he would not be upset if McGregor was chosen ahead of him for Burley's Scotland squad.
"Coming to Rangers, I knew I was going to be a number two and my place in the Scotland squad was maybe in jeopardy because of that," said Alexander, who moved to Ibrox from Ipswich Town in January.
"I don't know what the manager's thinking. Obviously, it's going to be difficult to leave Allan out.
"I'd like to be in. But, if I'm not, I'm not going to lose too much sleep."
Scotland recently announced a friendly to be played against Argentina at Hampden in November and Alexander has his eyes on the number one jersey for the high-profile match, providing he can continue to vindicate Walter Smith's faith in him.
"If I can keep doing well with Rangers, the Argentina game is coming up in couple of months and hopefully I can get in the squad for that one," said Alexander.
"It's nice to finally get a chance and show the manager I'm capable of becoming the number one.
"It's tough for Allan. But, for me, I'll hopefully make the most of the opportunity given to me.
"It was the manager's choice to make the decision. It was probably a very hard decision for him.
"For me, it's fantastic. He obviously believes in my ability and believes that I can do a job, which is very flattering for me and gives me a lot of confidence."

A below-par Chelsea side were held to a goalless draw away to Romanian champions CFR Cluj.
Blues striker Didier Drogba had a frustrating game and was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury in the second half.
Eugen Trica and Alvaro Pereira threatened in the first-half for Cluj, while Salomon Kalou wasted a couple of chances for the visitors.
Trica clipped the post late on and Petr Cech denied Pereira with a smart save.
Cluj showed their 2-1 win in Rome was far from a one-off as they made life difficult for the visitors.
On this performance the Champions League debutants will be anything but pushovers.
But Chelsea will still feel this was a missed opportunity to take a firm grip on Group A.
The early signs were good with Drogba linking up well with Kalou inside five minutes, only for his team-mate to scuff a shot at keeper Eduard Stancioiu.
But it was a rare sight on goal as Cluj got men back, defended deep and cut off Chelsea's supply from the flanks.
They also showed plenty of ambition on the counter-attack, providing more worrying moments for Chelsea's backline than manager Luiz Felipe Scolari would have wanted.
He will have been alarmed at how Trica was allowed so much room in the box but relieved that the Romanian miscued in front of goal.
Drogba tried to put Kalou through on goal with a neat ball over the top, but again he lacked the necessary sharpness to test Stancioiu.
Pereira whistled a left-foot shot past a diving Cech but also just the wrong side of the post.
Chelsea threatened again when Frank Lampard picked out Drogba with a free-kick routine straight from the training ground, but the striker failed to connect cleanly in front of goal.
Nothing was going right for the Blues' Ivory Coast striker as he continually came off second best to some fully committed Cluj defending.
Scolari tried to offer Drogba more support with the introduction of Nicolas Anelka for Kalou at half-time.
But 12 minutes after the break, Drogba was forced off when he landed awkwardly trying to get on the end of a Florent Malouda cross.
He looked to be in severe pain as he stayed down for several minutes and was clearly in some distress as he was stretchered from the field.
Chelsea striker Drogba has only just returned from injury
Lampard had a couple of sights at goal as he looked to rescue Chelsea's evening, but he shot weakly and then produced a dipping effort too close to Stancioiu.
But it was the home side who looked the more likely to steal the three points in the dying stages, with Trica's shot edging the outside of the woodwork and then Cech had to be alert to deny Pereira's effort.
Anelka had a half chance at the other end and Lampard shot wide in the second minute of injury time, but a Chelsea winner would have been cruel on Cluj.

Robbie Keane's first goal since his £20.3m move from Tottenham helped Liverpool ease to victory over PSV Eindhoven in Champions League Group D.
Dirk Kuyt put the Reds ahead after four minutes, following up after Andreas Isaksson saved Fernando Torres' volley.
Keane made it 2-0 before half-time when he hooked home Torres' bouncing cross.
Steven Gerrard wrapped up the win with a ferocious free-kick - his 100th goal for Liverpool - before Danny Koevermans bundled home a consolation for PSV.
There are sure to be sterner tests ahead for Liverpool in Europe this season than the visit of the Dutch champions but Reds boss Rafa Benitez has plenty of reasons to be satisfied after his side's convincing display.
PSV clearly came to Anfield with the intention of frustrating their hosts but they managed to do so for only four minutes before Kuyt broke the deadlock.
Visiting keeper Isaksson did well to deny Torres, who had ghosted in unmarked to meet Steven Gerrard's cross, but he should have done better with Kuyt's shot which span out of his grasp and into the top corner.
From then on it was hard to see how Huub Stevens' side were going to emulate Stoke City, the only side to deny the Reds victory at Anfield this season.
PSV persevered with five men across the back - which at least kept Liverpool quiet immediately after they had scored - but with Nordin Amrabat on his own up front they were restricted to long-range efforts in their search for an equaliser.
Liverpool, meanwhile, continued to look menacing and, even before his goal, Keane might have had a penalty when he was tripped in the area by Carlos Salcido.
Torres was next to threaten, rising unmarked to head a Fabio Aurelio corner wide, and it was fitting that he was involved in Liverpool's second goal on 34 minutes.
Much has been made of the potential potency of Torres' partnership with Keane but the common consensus is that it will be the Republic of Ireland international who will be creating chances for his Spanish team-mate.
The opposite was the case here, with Torres combining well with Kuyt on the right before sending over an inviting cross that Keane despatched past the helpless Isaksson to end his Liverpool goal-drought in his 11th game for the Reds.
Aside from his fruitless spell with Inter Milan, Keane has never had to wait this long for his first goal for a club and the relief in his trademark tumbling celebration was obvious.
Steven Gerrard lets fly with the free-kick for his 100th Liverpool goal
PSV, to their credit, continued to work hard and Otman Bakkal and Amrabat both sent shots skidding wide of Pepe Reina's goal.
But Liverpool were still more than comfortable and Torres should have made it 3-0 when he ran on to Jan Kromkamp's sloppy backpass only to see his attempted flick drift wide.
The third goal did arrive on 74 minutes, courtesy of Gerrard, who marked his century of Reds goals with an absolute scorcher.
Gerrard, so often Liverpool's saviour in the past, has scored many more crucial goals for his club but few have been better strikes than his free-kick, which left Isaksson with no chance.
That should have capped a fine night for the Anfield faithful but instead it was PSV who had the final word, Koevermans meeting a deep cross and getting enough on the ball to beat Reina.
The end result was never in doubt, however, and Liverpool will head into back-to-back fixtures with Atletico Madrid in a strong position to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Harry Redknapp has said Sol Campbell is in the right frame of mind to play in Portsmouth's first round, second leg Uefa Cup tie on Thursday night.
Hampshire Police are to investigate racial and homophobic abuse directed at the 34-year-old during Pompey's 2-0 win at home to Tottenham on Sunday.
And ahead of his side's trip to Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal, manager Redknapp described the abuse as filthy.
"That's got no place in football what went on Sunday," he said.
"It's got no place in life, it's a disgrace. People chant filth, it's nothing to do with football.
There is a difference between banter and abuse. What happened to Sol really crossed the line
Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch
"Some of the stuff that goes on is completely out of order.
"We're talking about awful abuse, some of this stuff is racist - it's everything. It's wrong and has no place in football.
"How do you do that in front of your kids? What kind of a nutter must you be? What kind of human being must you be when you take your little kids to football and shout filth? It can't be right.
"Of course he is upset about it and we are all disappointed about what's happened to him but he'll be fine. He'll move on and get on with his football. He's been terrific for us."
Striker Peter Crouch echoed his manager's sentiments and believes crowd abuse reached a new low with the chants directed in Campbell's direction.
"There is probably not a player in the Premier League who has not had some stick but there is a difference between banter and abuse. What happened to Sol really crossed the line," he said.
"But he showed against Tottenham on Sunday he can react with a fantastic performance. It has had no effect on his game and it won't affect it in the future."
Portsmouth hold a 2-0 lead going into Thursday night's second leg match and Campbell is likely to start alongside Sylvain Distain in defence after keeping a clean sheet on Sunday.
Despite his side having the advantage, Redknapp is looking for his side to attack as they look to book a place in the competition's group stages.
"Although we know they are still a dangerous side with great flair we have players who can cause them problems as well.
"We are certainly not coming here to sit back for 90 minutes and invite them on to us. That would be asking for trouble.
"It will be a tough game we know but we would love to get through this round at least and keep the excitement going for the fans.
"They've had a great time recently including winning the FA Cup last season and we want it to continue."

Hull City's Wembley play-off hero Dean Windass has held clear-the-air talks with manager Phil Brown.
The 39-year-old striker has yet to start a Premier League game this season but will stay and fight for his place.
Tigers chairman Paul Duffen told BBC Radio Humberside: "I was hoping that Deano would find a way to be happy and play a part at the football club.
"He wants to play football as long as he can walk and I think that's fantastic - I don't rule out Dean."
Windass scored the winning goal at Wembley in May that clinched top-flight football for the Tigers for the first time but last week the forward expressed his frustration at not playing and Duffen says he totally understands those concerns.
"I do believe he has got to keep training at 100% and I think he has a lot to give on the training ground and I think he knows that," added Duffen. "I think that's one of things that Phil reinforced when they spoke.
"Dean Windass' presence around the training ground, around the travelling squad, his experience and his motivation is absolutely enormous and I don't rule out that Dean will play a part in this campaign.
"As the oldest professional at this football club he can expect to play less of a part than others but I've no doubt about his enormous value at this football club and I'm delighted that he wants to stay and serve Hull City Football Club for the rest of the season."
Windass had been linked to Barnsley but the manager of the Championship club, Simon Davey, has denied he has been in talks with the veteran striker.

Newcastle interim manager Joe Kinnear has revealed owner Mike Ashley is in talks with eight prospective buyers.
The 61-year-old insists he will not be in the job for the long term and said: "I know for a fact Mike is talking to eight consortiums about the club.
"I don't know the outcome of those. I haven't got a timescale on it, so I don't really know what the outcome is.
"As for who they are, what they are and when it will happen, there is no time-scale on it."
Kinnear takes charge of his first game against Everton on Sunday, and added: "I am contracted for eight games, but I assume that, should due diligence and the deals go on a little bit longer, it may run into 10 or 12 games."
Ashley put the club up for sale in the wake of the sudden departure of former manager Kevin Keegan and BBC Sport understands Ashley has reduced his asking price from £450m to a figure in the region of £280m to £300m.
It is believed prospectuses of sale - an official document detailing the club's current financial position - have been sent out to seven interested parties with consortiums from Nigeria and South Africa among the most prominent.
All potential purchasers have had to sign a confidentiality clause to prevent the club's figures from being made public.
The Nigerian group has made its interest public, while the South African consortium has maintained a low profile.
